- Free Covid Test
- CDC has updated its guidance for people who know they have been exposed to COVID-19.
If you were exposed to COVID-19, regardless of your vaccination status: the CDC recommends that instead of quarantining, you wear a high-quality mask for 10 days and get tested 5 full days after your last exposure (day 6).
If you have COVID-19: regardless of vaccination status, you should isolate yourself from others for 5 days. If after 5 days you are fever-free for 24 hours without the use of medication and your symptoms are improving, or you never had symptoms, you should test on Day 6. If the test is negative, you may end isolation but should continue masking around others and in public. If the test is positive, you should continue to isolate.
Individuals with moderate illness or severe illness or with a weakened immune system, should isolate through day 10 and consult their doctor before ending isolation.
The joint early childhood and K-12 guidance for students and staff has also been updated to reflect the updated CDC guidance on exposure and isolation in these settings.
Latest numbers
As of November 8, 2022, 5,564,679 people in Massachusetts have been fully vaccinated.
Question of the week
Q: Can we administer the monovalent Novavax booster dose to people who prefer it to the mRNA vaccine, even if they've already had other booster doses?
A: NO. CDC's current guidance allows the monovalent Novavax COVID-19 Vaccine as a booster dose option for adults who will not receive bivalent mRNA vaccine only if they have had no previous booster doses.
The monovalent Novavax COVID-19 vaccine is authorized for a booster dose in limited situations. People ages 18 years and older who completed primary vaccination using any COVID-19 vaccine and have not received any previous booster dose(s) (including any previous mRNA monovalent or bivalent booster dose[s]) may receive a monovalent Novavax booster dose at least 6 months after completion of the primary series if they are unable to receive an mRNA vaccine (i.e., mRNA vaccine contraindicated or not available) or unwilling to receive an mRNA vaccine and would otherwise not receive a booster dose.
Who to vaccinate
COVID-19 vaccination is recommended for everyone ages 6 months and older in the United States for the prevention of COVID-19. There is currently no FDA-approved or FDA-authorized COVID-19 vaccine for children younger than age 6 months.
People can stay up to date with COVID-19 vaccination by completing a primary series and receiving the most recent booster dose recommended for them by the CDC.
Primary series vaccination
For primary series vaccination, three monovalent COVID-19 vaccines (listed in alphabetical order by manufacturer), are recommended: Moderna, Novavax, and Pfizer-BioNTech. Bivalent mRNA vaccines are not authorized or approved at this time for primary series doses. The same vaccine product should be used for all doses of the primary series (see Interchangeability of COVID-19 vaccine products).
Booster vaccination
For booster vaccination, an mRNA vaccine (i.e., Moderna or Pfizer-BioNTech) is recommended. Recommendations vary based on age and primary series product. People ages 5 years and older are recommended to receive 1 bivalent mRNA booster dose after completion of any FDA-approved or FDA-authorized monovalent primary series or previously received monovalent booster dose(s). This new booster recommendation replaces all prior booster recommendations for this age group. Monovalent mRNA vaccines are no longer authorized as booster doses for people ages 5 years and older.
A monovalent Novavax booster dose (instead of a bivalent mRNA booster dose) may be used in limited situations in people ages 18 years and older who completed any FDA-approved or FDA-authorized monovalent primary series, have not received any previous booster dose(s), and have unable to receive an mRNA vaccine (i.e., mRNA vaccine contraindicated or not available) or unwilling to receive an mRNA vaccine and would otherwise not receive a booster dose. CDC allows the current monovalent Novavax COVID-19 Vaccine as a booster dose option for adults who will not receive bivalent mRNA vaccine only if they have had no previous booster doses.
